In the middle of the 20th century, offset lithography and phototypesetting replaced letterpress as the dominant printing method. however, letterpress printing has seen a revival in recent years. There exist today letterpress printers, working mostly in small shops, whose passion and dedication is unprecedented. They produce letterpress items that are cherished forever. This image is taken from a late 20th century engraving of a painting by Ettore Forti. Through a high-quality digital reproduction process, the details of the original engraving have been carefully preserved.

Ettore Forti was an Italian artist and archaeologist, whose work spanned the decades of the late 19th and early 20 centuries. Although we know little about his life, we find a significant number of his paintings used as illustrations in early Latin textbooks. Forti painted genre scenes of Roman life. His paintings were intricate and intriguing, filled with beautiful details of architectural features, furnishings, and costumes. As in the engraving, Forti’s scenes of daily Roman life often captured a moment that was touched with drama or humor.

These note cards, digitally reproduced from the original prints, make an ideal gift for the classicist or lover of antiquity.
